Which toilet is better to choose

One of the conditions for normal living conditions is a properly functioning bath and toilet, and the main thing is normally functioning plumbing fixtures. One of the key points is the correct selection of plumbing. This article will discuss how and which toilet to choose.

Installation method

First of all, you need to choose a toilet according to the installation method. There are both floor-standing and mounted. Floor-standing - a classic of the genre, familiar to everyone from childhood, it is worth recalling only that there are also corner models - they are often forgotten. Hanging toilets appeared with us not so long ago; they differ in that they are attached to a steel frame, which is hidden behind a false wall. On the same frame, behind the wall, a flushing cistern is installed, below there are cold water supply pipes and sewer pipes. This frame is usually called an installation.

According to the installation method, the toilet bowls are floor-standing and hanging

A toilet with an installation is certainly more aesthetically pleasing - only the bowl is visible, which "hangs" on the wall. This installation method makes cleaning easier - the floor is free and the hanging bowl is easy to clean. Minus - you have to fence off part of the room - you need to retreat about 30 cm from the main wall, and this is not always possible. But behind this wall, you can place the routing of pipes and other communications. There is one more feature - the installation work is somewhat more complicated, the price for the services of plumbers is much higher, although you can also handle it yourself.

So, according to this parameter, the choice of a toilet bowl is mainly determined by the size of the toilet or combined bathroom, as well as your preferences.

About, how to install a toilet with your own hands read here.

What materials are they made of

The most common are porcelain and earthenware toilets, but these are far from the only materials from which they are made. There are also natural and artificial stones. Products made from natural stone are very beautiful, quite hygienic - the stone is ground until an absolutely smooth surface is obtained, so that it is easy to care for the products. But stone toilets weigh a lot, are very expensive, and they do not tolerate shock loads well - they can crack.

Artificial stone toilets are made from composite compounds, which include crumbs or dust of natural minerals. Outwardly, they differ little from stone ones, but the cost is much lower, the decorativeness is at a height, so this is a good option for those who like non-standard solutions.

Choosing a toilet is not easy - they come from different materials and different shapes

Metal toilets are also exotic. Made of stainless steel, which makes them almost forever. The disadvantage is a considerable price, a small assortment. It is also worth considering that their non-standard appearance should fit into the environment.

So it turns out that you have to choose a toilet bowl from two materials - porcelain or faience. Which material is better? Porcelain, of course. Its surface is less porous, smoother, fewer traces remain on it, almost no plaque remains. It is easier to care for porcelain toilets, their surface looks white and shiny even after many years. Faience is much cheaper, but its surface is not so smooth, and the color is usually "not so white". So if you choose what is better faience or porcelain for the toilet, take porcelain.

Types of toilets by bowl

The comfort of using the toilet is largely determined by the shape of the bowl. There are three types of bowls:

  • disc-shaped;
  • visor;
  • funnel-shaped.

a brief description of

Poppet toilets are so named because the drain hole is displaced forward, and the bowl has a flattened bottom, similar to a shelf or plate. Hence the name - disc-shaped, sometimes this species is also called "with a shelf".

With such a structure, the waste remains on the ledge and is washed off when the water is drained. It is this design that can splash when waste falls, which is very unpleasant. If you have such a problem, you can solve it by adjusting the drain - to make the water pressure less.

Funnel-like species are even more likely to get sprayed. In them, the drain hole is located almost in the middle. The smell with such a structure is minimal - excrement immediately falls into the water, there are almost no traces on the surface, when the water is drained, everything is finally cleared. But when waste falls, splashes and splashes are very common.

It is usually done without splashes in visor toilets. Their drain is displaced forward, and the back wall of the bowl is even or even slightly curved. Once on it, the waste slides down, so there really is no spray, but traces remain, and the smell is more noticeable. Even when the water is drained, the marks do not always disappear; you have to help with a brush.

Therefore, if you want to have less splashes, choosing a toilet is simple - the optimal shape of the bowl is visor,

What is anti-splash system

When communicating with sellers in stores, you will be told about the anti-splash system. In fact, the whole system is a narrow drain hole with rounded edges and a low water level in the bowl.

With the dimensions of the drain hole, everything is quite simple - it can be assessed visually, but how to understand to what level the water will be collected? It is necessary to look at the outlet of the toilet bowl (the branch pipe at the back). The water will be at the level of its bottom edge. Another option is to look at the circuit in the technical catalog. All dimensions are marked there, including the water level (marked with a red arrow in the photo).

Another telltale sign that there will be no splash is an off-center drain hole. This is perhaps the most important sign.

What to do if the toilet is standing, but there are splashes. There are two ways out - to move relative to the drain hole or to pre-throw several pieces of toilet paper there.

Types of drainage (how water moves)

To decide which flush in the toilet is better, consider the features of each. There are three drain systems:

  • straight (cascading, horizontal);
  • circular:
    • circular straight line;
    • circular swirling.

With direct drainage, water is drained from the drain hole in a powerful stream. At the same time, it covers about half of the volume of the bowl, but in the most dirty part there is a powerful stream. This system is typical for all models that were produced in the USSR. The disadvantage is that half of the bowl is not washed, you have to clean it with a brush.

Circular flush differs in that the edge of the bowl is made in the form of a groove, in which holes are located according to a certain pattern. When flushed, water enters this gutter, spreads around the entire circumference, through the holes entering the bowl. Differs in more uniform water distribution, quieter operation. Such a flush is more rational, but there is a solid minus - the possibility of overgrowing small holes.

Choosing a toilet on this basis is also simple - a circular flush is better. Just pay attention to the fact that the bezel is ceramic and does not have plastic inserts. If there are plastic elements, this is only an imitation of a circular flush, which works no better than a direct one. Pivot flush toilets are expensive and unpleasant to open.

Release type

The type of toilet bowl outlet (back pipe) is determined by the position of the sewer outlet to which it is to be connected. Different editions do not provide any advantages. Therefore, the choice of a toilet bowl in this case is simple - you need to install one that fits your sewage system.

Types of toilet bowls

Types of toilet bowls

There are three types of release:

  • Horizontal. From the name it is clear - it is parallel to the floor plane. This type of toilet is suitable if the sewer outlet is 10-15 cm above the floor level.
  • Vertical. The drain hole goes down. This type is installed if the sewer is hidden in the floor and its outlet is directed upwards.
  • Oblique release. It is convenient to connect these models if the sewer pipe is at the floor level or slightly higher. Just keep in mind that the angle of inclination can be different - 30 °, 40 °, 60 °, 75 °. Choose the one that will fit best.

The choice of a toilet is also simple in that case - it depends on how the sewer pipe is located. If you have an old device, you are not going to change the sewage system, it is still easier - the new one must have the same outlet.

Tank type

The cistern in a floor-standing toilet can be of four types:

  • Compact. The tank is attached to a special ledge-shelf; there are models with ledges on the tank, which connect them to the bowl. Advantage - the tank can be easily replaced, disadvantage - leaks are possible at the junction with the bowl. Tanks of this type are usually rectangular and angular in shape.
  • Monoblock. In such a toilet, the cistern and the bowl are a single whole, there can be no leaks. Disadvantage - in case of damage, the entire structure will have to be changed.
  • Remote cistern (high and medium). The water tank is mounted on the wall at different heights. It is connected to the bowl by a pipe. This design can be considered a classic, the disadvantages are the possibility of leakage at the joints.

Which toilet in this case is better to decide is difficult. They all have their pros and cons. We can only say that the more popular model is the compact. It is easier to transport a bowl and a tank separately than a monolithic structure.

Toilet fittings

There are two types of fittings in the toilet - for filling and draining water. This is the part that is not worth saving on, because the comfort of using the device largely depends on how well the water drain works. The good news is that these devices can be changed at any time, and you can do it yourself, and the bad news is that good toilet fittings cost a lot of money.

There are two drain systems - lever and with a button. Lever flush toilets have a small lever on the side of the cistern. To drain the water, press this lever. The device is simple and straightforward, easy to configure and repair. The downside is that you cannot adjust the volume of water that goes down at a time - the entire tank always leaves. At current water prices, this is unwise.

Lever drain (left) and push-button (right)

Lever drain (left) and push-button (right)

Toilets with push-button flush have a button lid. It can work in different ways:

  • Water flows while the button is pressed. On the one hand, it is good - it is possible to control the amount of water. On the other hand, standing and holding the button is not very fun.
  • When the button is pressed, the entire volume is drained. The disadvantages are obvious.
  • Flush system with two buttons. Fittings of this type are more complex and therefore more expensive. But it is possible to dump half the amount of water or completely the entire volume.

How to choose a toilet on this basis? Based on personal preference only. The only rule is to trust trusted brands. Maybe inexpensive, but well-known, which have been on the market for several years.

Additional functions

Modern technologies make our life more and more comfortable, and toilets have not been spared by innovations. There are models with various additional functions. One of the most popular is a toilet with a bidet function. In the bowl or seat (there are some) there are built-in sprinklers, which, on command, leave and pour warm water. The temperature is set from the control panel, which is usually located on the side.

Other interesting features include heating and lighting. How much illumination is needed is a moot point, but heating the rim of the toilet bowl can and will be pleasant in winter.

Interesting models: photo

Surely you will not be surprised if you find out that designers are involved in the development of toilets - their shapes are very unusual. If earlier it was easy to choose a toilet - it is good if there were five models, but today it is very difficult to choose from hundreds and thousands. But you can find plumbing, decorated in a certain style - from classic to modern or hi-tech. We will post photos of some interesting models from the point of view of design below.

      What model are we talking about, because they have more than one toilet? So far I have looked at the reviews on the Market on the AM.PM Like C808607SC floor-standing toilet. The reviews are good, but they just look like custom ones. Moreover, there are more reviews than for the well-known Swedish brand Gustavsberg, which also inspires some doubts.

    When it came to choosing a floor-standing toilet, I realized that it was easier to choose a car. It turned out that the same thoughts visit not only me. When reading the forums, it turns out that almost any vending model has some kind of jamb, such as: it washes poorly, splashes, leaks, fits unevenly to the floor, etc. When we came to a plumbing store, a seller wandering there advised us SANITA LUXE Best with a microlift (Samara Stroyfarfor company). Outwardly I liked the toilet and a prepayment was made. At home, I decided to look at the reviews on this model - 2.5 out of 5 according to estimates on Yandex.Market. People write the same thing - bad flush. Those. you have to do a complete discharge of water several times to wash off the paper and everything else. I decided to drop a couple of lines to the manufacturer's mail - suddenly competitors are slandering. Alas, the comrades did not answer, from which I concluded that the reviews were true. There are videos on YouTube on this toilet, and even it seems to flush everything, but you can clearly see that when flushing, the water level in the bowl increases greatly. Those. when flushed, all the contents will first rise to stain the walls. Returning to the store, I decided to talk to another seller, who immediately said that this was a known problem of SANITA LUXE Best and was allegedly connected with the fact that the siphon (bend) was shortened.
    I decided to pick up something else. Initially, I wanted to buy a toilet worth up to 10 thousand rubles, but after all the calculations, more expensive models were also included in the candidates. So, I considered Roca Victoria, GUSTAVSBERG Nordic 2310 GB112310301707 and GUSTAVSBERG Basic 392 GB1039236105. Then I dismissed Roca Victoria, since the reviews were not ice. It remains to choose between two Swedes. Outwardly, I liked Nordic more, and even more so the seller said that they recently bought one for the Tayota car dealership. Alas, by the time of the exchanges, "Nordics" were over and I had to take what we have - Basic 392 with a vandal-proof cover without a microlift. In general, I think that with a light lid, there is no need for a microlift.
    So, the toilet bowl GUSTAVSBERG Basic 392 was delivered assembled (I was told in the store that the Gustavsbergs are assembled at the factory). Those.like everything is assembled, tightened, checked. However, after installation, it turned out that the drain mechanism was sticking. Apparently, just during transportation, he turned a little and the float touched the wall of the barrel. He opened the lid and turned the mechanism slightly. For one more time I saw that the tank is fastened with brass bolts, i.e. they won't rust like a cheap toilet.
    Now for work. Water is collected quickly enough. In 90% of cases, he manages to flush toilet paper in the first flush mode - 3 liters. The anti-splash system works fine, but not perfect. The ideal result is possible only in old Soviet toilets with a shelf.
    I will sum up. At the moment I was not disappointed that I bought a GUSTAVSBERG Basic 392. As far as I know, this model has been discontinued, but the lineup does not end there. You can take GUSTAVSBERG Nordic or Logic. All sellers agreed that, as a rule, there are no problems with the products of this company. In general, the production gives a 20-year warranty for porcelain and 7 years for drain fittings. The move is clearly marketing, but still.
